School Websites

Parents, we want you to be aware that the school websites have been extremely slow or not loading at all at times this week (11/14 through 11/17).  This was the message from:
Steven W. Anderson, MAEd.
District Instructional Technologist
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

"As you may have noticed the website is loading very slowly. I have been in contact with the network engineers at Schoolwires. They are aware of the issue and are working quickly to resolve the issue. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly".

Many teachers have been unable to post homework assignments on their websites as a result of this interruption of service.  Hopefully, School Wires the company who provides us with our website, will fix the problem soon.

November News for Parents

Hello Parents,

Here's a few items we want to make you aware.

1)  Our PTA has been adding items to the PTA website:  We have posted PTSA Board Meeting minutes on the PTA website (under Files and Forms), which is linked under Faculty and Staff Webpages under PTA , and also under the parents tab off the main SEMS webpage :)  We have also posted a form for signing up for the PTA--It's not too late to sign-up!

2)  Many Schools are doing the Box Top's Program, and it's a great way to generate money for the schools,  especially in these difficult economic times.  General Mills' Box Tops for Education has teamed up with Ford to offer more ways to earn cash for our school. If you have some time, all you have to do is register at forddrivesboxtops.com and you'll automatically be entered into the Ford Drives Box Tops Sweepstakes, where they're giving away 250,000 Bonus Box Tops in prizes.
  • One grand prize winner will receive 200,000 Bonus Box Tops
  • Five more winners will receive 10,000 Bonus Box Tops each
You can also get up to 25 eBoxTops by watching Ford videos or request a brochure to earn 10 eBoxTops. And, earn 250 eBoxTops with the purchase of a new Ford vehicle.
When you register, there is a spot to find a school.  (enter our zip code-- 27284) and choose SouthEast Middle School.  You have to sign up by December 1, 2011, at forddrivesboxtops.com to get started. Thanks for your help!

*****************************************************************************
3)  Finally, on Friday November 4th the PTA is kicking of its school fundraiser--"World's Finest Chocolate"--Below is the flyer with more information.  Please help us make this event a success.  Students should have brought home information about this event, and are receiving more details at the fund-raiser kick off on Friday, November 4th.  Students must have a signed permission form (bottom of this flyer) in order to participate. Event planners have secured 20 expert presenters.

Cynthia Hatch, one of the planners of the event, says there is something for everyone. “We have a wide variety of presentations. There’s everything from paying for college to couponing to setting up your own home gym. We even have a session for kids on how to manage their money.”

Hatch said they had no problem finding financial experts to share their knowledge. They are eager to teach residents how to maximize the money they already make.

Participants will get to choose four sessions to attend with each session lasting 20 minutes. Registration is recommended (click here to register). You can also sign-up on the Southeast Middle School website www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/sms.  Just look for the link on the left.

October News

Dear Parents,

We are trying a new form of communication using our “Alert Now message broadcast system”.  This is the same system we use to send phone messages.  However, this email alert system only includes e-mails of families who have sent email information into school to be entered into NCWISE.  Some people may not be on the list, so help spread the word.  We will also be sending information through our phone system and Core teachers to get the word out if parents would like to get on this email list.

For future reference, this email will also be available for access on our website under quick links.

Here’s this week’s Alert Now e-mail:

**Core and Encore Progress reports should be coming home in student packets on Wednesday**

1)  Parents, did you know that you can listen to missed Alert Now phone messages by going to our website and retrieving them with the phone number that receives those messages?  Have you ever had an answering machine hang-up on the message or a person in your house accidentally hangs up on the call? This is a way for you to still get the information:
If you go to our SEMS website:   http://wsfcs.k12.nc.us/sms  click on " Alert Now Phone Messages " on the left under quick links.  Input the phone number that ordinarily receives the messages, and it should pull up the voice message on your computer for you to listen :)  Messages will be stored for a minimum of 15 days and many times longer than that.

2) Online Bill Pay:  Our school is starting to offer payment for school-related items using Online Bill Pay.  Currently we have 7th grade trips available for payment, but will soon be posting other school fees that you can pay online.  There are many advantages to paying online including less chance of monies getting lost in transport. If you go to our School's website http://wsfcs.k12.nc.us/sms , and look under Quick links you will find a link that says Online School Payments :

3)   Destiny Catalog/Missing Items available on-line:  Students are being taught to log in to their library account at school AND at home.  Soon they can see any debts they have such as unreturned textbooks, gym uniforms, cafeteria fees from last year, and library books.
  • Go to the SE Website and click on Media Center on the left,
  • Click on login in the upper right hand corner:
  • user name is their student number and password is their last name in all lower case letters.
  • Click on the "My info" tab at the top to see what the child has checked out, on hold and debts that are owed.

From our Police Officer, David Brown (dmbrown@wsfcs.k12.nc.us)

Effective October 1st, there will no longer be a Police Officer directing traffic at the main entrance to SEMS in the afternoon at dismissal time. Please keep this in mind and take extra care when exiting the parking lot onto Old Salem Rd.
There will still be officers at both the bus lot and main entrances in the morning. This change will only effect the afternoon dismissal. If everyone will proceed with as much care and diligence as you would normally drive, we should not have any major issues.

Parents, save this upcoming date: Tuesday, November 15, 2011

With all the news about the recession, what better time to attend our first annual “Family Financial Fitness night” on Tuesday November 15, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Southeast Middle School?     Experts in the fields of business and finance will be on hand to answer questions, and provide important information about personal finances.  More information will be forthcoming, but plan to attend if this topic interests you!

If you are receiving this email, and not a parent of a student at Southeast Middle School, please reply to this email and we will remove you from the list.

Sincerely,

John Downs, Technology Facilitator
